How to Buy Art for Your Loved Ones

The holiday shopping season is almost upon us. The annual hunt for the perfect gifts will soon begin.

When we think about buying original art for our loved ones it feels like a dicey proposition.

  • What style do they prefer? Realistic? Abstract?
  • Do they have favorite mediums? Oil, watercolor or fabulous textiles?
  • What colors would they like?
  • What size would fit into their home?
  • Where would they put it?

Most of us, even us artists, will let these types of questions stop us from buying art for our friends and family.

We don’t have to.

Research Their Preferences

Now is the perfect time to research their preferences so you can buy them art with confidence:

  1. Spend some time looking around their house and noting their taste.
  2. Look for gaps on their walls or shelve where new art might fit in.
  3. Note what sizes of art would best fit into their current collection.
  4. Plan a visit to the art museum with your friend or family member and discuss your art preferences.
  5. Attend gallery openings with your loved one and play the “which is your favorite? which is your least favorite” game.
  6. Send them links to artists websites with comments such as “I thought of you when I saw this” and see what kind of reaction you get.

The Reward

When it’s time to exchange gifts, there is no way to be 100% sure they will love the artwork you have purchased them, but if you’ve done your research, you have a pretty good chance.

They will certainly appreciate the time you invested in getting to know them better and the thought you put into your purchase.

Besides, do they really need another mass produced scented candle, appliance or sweater?
