100 (Mostly) Monochromatic Compositions
The Project
In 2016, I participated in the 100 Days Project with an intention to explore the possibilities of monochromatic design.
Monochromatic compositions are design created with only a single hue (like red) in all of its variations: shades (darker versions of the hue created by adding black), tints (lighter versions of the hue created by adding white), and tones (lower intensity color created by adding gray).
The output of my exploration was one hundred 6×6 inch (15×15 cm) textile paintings created between August 24 through December 1, 2016.
I used my handdyed fabrics for this project. My compositions are technically not monochromatic because I don’t precisely measure the dye powder during my dyeing process. Therefore the fabrics I used in each composition are not variation of a single precise hue – but close enough.
I also found I preferred adding accents of other colors to add interest to the work.
And so the project became (Mostly) Monochromatic Designs.
