New Starts
Hello March – the back-to-work month for me. January and February have been glorious vacation time – lots of kayaking and hiking and canoeing.
Now time to turn my attention to my art practice.
A clear demarcation of the start something new (such as a new year or a new season) can be a powerful event. An event that I frequently leverage to slingshot me back into action.
The start of a new week is another great time for a reset.
Weekly Reset Question
One of the things I offer in the MakeBigArt Community is a weekly reset question. A question to consider as we all leverage the magic and power of the possibilities a new week can bring.
The question is a chance to pause and reflect on the week.
Along with the question I share a few thoughts on the topic.
The weekly reset questions range on a variety of topics and today’s stumped me for a bit.
This week’s weekly reset post:
Do you know your priority for the week?
Note the use of the use of the singular. Priority.
What ONE thing is your priority this week?
Note the use of the use of the singular. Priority.
What ONE thing is your priority this week?
I find that when I am need to restart again after a break the fastest way for me to do that is to focus on one thing at a time.
I stop making big long lists and I write down just the single thing that needs my focus for the week and I do just that – I focus on it. Not that I don’t do a other things – but I return again and again to that project.
Having just that 1 project as the priority means that I don’t waste time with the “hm – what should I work on next” dithering. Which is my default state when I don’t have my priorities sorted out.
One year I selected “priority” as my word of the year. As a reminder to do just 1 thing at a time.
It’s powerful!
So what is your priority for the week?
(ps – step one for making progress on your project might be breaking it down into smaller chunks so you can get started on it)
My Response
I’ve now spent the entire day mucking about doing this and that – asking myself “what is my priority this week??” There is a lot I want to do.
Stuff for classes I’m teaching, stuff for the community, bookkeeping (did someone say taxes?), starting in on my website redesign, and of course studio time.
I’m also way behind on emails (not that I will ever be done with email but I’ve essentially ignored email for two months) and posting on social media and in general reconnecting.
So for a while I was leaning towards my priority being finishing catching up.
But I’m probably going to do that anyway. So I kept resisting committing to that priority.
I’ve been doing a lot of sketchbook work since returning home from vacation but the textile studio time has been a bit more sparse.
It’s been sparse since the first of the year – which is expected given the vacation time.
And time to put an end to that. So my Priority for this week is getting back into the textile studio and sewing again. Daily. And when possible – first thing in the morning.
And tada – at 5:35 pm I’ve set my priority for the week.
Next week will be easier as I get myself back into the swing of work again.
What is your priority this week?
