Studio Procrastination
I’ve had the newest textile painting in the portals series (a series that will soon have a new name) designed and ready to stitch together for a few months.
While it is a simple composition, there are some tricky bits sewing it together. And so the fabric sits on my wall, moving around the studio from time to time, in hopes of it will be next.
I keep passing it over.
Because it is tricky. There is no obvious order in which to cut or sew it together. Which is great – I love the challenge. Although it’s been a while since I’ve sorted something like this out.
So I keep working on other things.
Until yesterday, when I decided enough was enough. I needed to get out of my head and move this work forward.

I knew I needed to start by solving the puzzle of where to cut first and what order to sew it together.
But every time I looked at the piece my brain would go in circles.
So I decided I needed to write down the answer. I snapped a photo of the composition, converted it to a line drawing, printed it out and within minutes I had the problem solved.
It really wasn’t all that hard. I’d just convinced myself it was.
A change of perspective is always a good way to move forward.
Underway Again
I’m now well on my way to finishing the composition and by end of the week I’ll be quilting it.
The corner bits on the wall will be the last sections added.
The crossed lines section required a bit of sewing and then unsewing to make it work out evenly. This is something I often do to create what looks like a simple compositions because I need things held together temporarily before I can make the next move.
