See my work in Three Exhibitions in August and September

Getting Art Out into the World

I’m very excited to share that i will have work in 3 exhibitions over the next two months. This year I decided it was time to put more effort into getting my art out into the world.

In the US I would often have up to 100 pieces of artwork out at different exhibitions and galleries every month and I had grown a bit complacent here in New Zealand. It was time to kick things up a notch.

The result is I’m busier than ever in the studio. Here is where you can see my work in person over the next two months.

Parkin Drawing Prize

First up is New Zealand’s Premiere Award for Drawing – the Parkin Drawing Prize.

The competition attracted 588 entries with 76 short-listed for the prize. Two of them mine!

I find out next week if I’m the winner (who doesn’t enjoy $25,000) or receive a merit prize ($500 would be very handy also.)

Although mostly I’m just thrilled to have been nominated. Twice.

Acknowledging stitch as a valid form of drawing was very exciting.

Sometimes New Zealand (and others) like to pretend that paint is in some way more “art” than other mediums. Not everyone has gotten the memo that this outdated and sexist opinion is no longer valid. Every victory moves textiles forward!

Chromatic Offerings

I will be participating in my first two person exhibition at the Taupo Museum along side my good friend Sophie Saunders.

We’ve long felt our work had great synergy and would exhibit well together and I was honored when she asked me to exhibit with her in this beautiful space.

The show is titled Chromatic Offerings and we each have this to say about our works:

Sophie Saunders: “My work is a sort of ongoing ‘pilgrimage’ with colour and light as my steadfast companions. I start with particular forms and allow the colour choices to come up during the process. This connects with and is dependent on meditation practice.

I have also been looking at reintegrating my feisty, gestural side with the more hard-edged approach of recent years.

If one is to be truthful in painting, I feel it is important to adequately reflect the coalface of one’s everyday life so that both the painter and the viewer are enabled to become more in tune with themselves through both the act of painting and the looking.”

Lisa Call: “This work investigates journeys and adventure, specifically questioning the choices I have made and the many paths I have taken. Where have I been? Where did I start? How did I get here? What were the pivotal decisions? What patterns do I see?

Colour is of primary importance and is combined intuitively employing a unique palette of hand dyed cotton fabrics. The emphasis on the circle shape brings to mind wheels, a key tool in human travel. The complexities of my ideas are explored through mark making and pattern.

Using both stitch and paint to create depth and movement. The dense quilting creates an enticing texture across the surface of the work.

The final composition is then stitched on to canvas nearly flattening the textile, mimicking my need for agency. As much I we crave adventure, I also crave control.”

The show runs from Saturday 20 August 2022 through Sunday 25 September 2022.

We will be giving artist talks at morning tea on Saturday 20 August 2022 at 10:30am.

Taupō Museum is open 7 days from 10am to 4:30pm and entry is free to Taupō District residents with proof of address.
