Postcards from New York
About the Series
This collection of textile paintings was informed by my impressions of New York City after 3 visits to the city between 2011 and 2012.
Details of those visits, preliminary sketches and images that informed this work appear below the artwork.

Visiting New York City
In November of 2011 I traveled to New York City to attend the opening of Uncommon Threads, an exhibit of art quilts at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, to experience my artwork exhibited in a gallery in the city for the first time.
This trip reignited my passion for the city, especially the architecture (and the food) and was my first time back after leaving New York in 1992 after a 2 year stint in Westchester County.
I returned to the city to celebrate my daughter’s 16th birthday in April, 2012 after my successful solo exhibit in Philadelphia at Bluestone Fine Arts Gallery. The focus of activity during this trip was the tourist sights and of course the food.
The final trip was in September, 2012 for the opening of my solo exhibit at The Art Quilt Gallery. I spent most of my time in museums, galleries and on the street soaking in the amazing atmosphere.
And of course eating.
Sketching with Thread
On my last trip to New York City I brought fabric and thread with me to do some slow sketching of my ideas for the series.
I find the slow process of sketching with thread and needle absolutely perfect for capturing my ideas.
